If you have a gi of your own, bring it! We do not have a gi policy at Advantage Jiu-Jitsu! In fact the the entire purpose of Advantage Jiu-Jitsu is to be as accessible, welcoming, and judgement-free as possible.

If you do not already own a gi, we have loaners available as well as gis for purchase.

For a no-gi class, a rashguard and shorts should be worn.

And of course, a water bottle is highly recommended. We have a water cooler station so you can refill as needed.

In short – and perhaps the most obvious point – the uniform! In Gi Classes, you wear a gi. In No-Gi, you don’t! Gi jiu-jitsu, the uniform is a fundamental piece of most techniques and movements. No-gi jiu-jitsu, on the other hand, more closely resembles wrestling. In no-gi classes, you can wear rash guards and board shorts or leggings. While each style has advantages and disadvantages (technically speaking), they share a remarkably similar conceptual foundation and are absolutely complementary to one another in training jiu-jitsu overall.

The first big obstacle to overcome is walking in the front door. We understand martial arts can be intimidating and are here to help! We will make sure you have a safe experience. This is a place where people come together to practice, make mistakes, and learn from one another. Unlike other popular martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu does not include over-aggressive attacks, punches, or kicks that can leave people unconscious. Rather, Jiu-Jitsu is quite the opposite. It is a fluid, graceful martial art that will challenge you to think logically to apply learned techniques and movements during training.

When you are a beginner it’s completely up to you if you want to participate in sparring. Many people decide to watch the first time they come to training. Try not to stress out about everything you don’t know. The instructors are here to explain the rules of sparing and goals you should have in mind while you are rolling with a partner. Sparring is a great tool for tracking our progress. It’s a fun experiment to find out what works and what doesn’t.

Jiu-Jitsu is a personal journey and everyone goes through the process differently. It’s important to remember to enjoy it and always be open to learning new things. Everyone starts at white belt and here at Advantage Jiu-Jitsu we welcome new members. We are always excited to see someone experience the joy of Jiu-Jitsu for the first time.

Jiu-Jitsu is a great form of exercise! In addition to being immensely FUN, training will increase your muscle tone, bodily coordination, cardiovascular capacity, muscular endurance, balance, and will reduce overall body fat. All that being said, please make sure you hydrate and fuel yourself properly before and after training.

The typical class structure for all of our classes here at Advantage Jiu-Jitsu is a warm up with drilling, technique, and then positional and regular sparring. If you are brand new to Jiu-Jitsu we would suggest coming to our fundamentals class which is designed to teach you all the core foundational techniques. If your schedule does not allow for this we will be sure to do our best to make you feel comfortable joining any of our classes. Sparring is optional for beginners.

YES! Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent choice for women, especially for how it contributes to one’s self-defensive ability, sense of community and belonging, and of course, mental and physical fitness. Regarding self-defense, it is a fantastic skill set to have because, when an “opponent’s” physical size exceeds our own, Jiu-Jitsu trains us to utilize leverage and specific techniques that work to fill that gap.

The community of women in Jiu-Jitsu is still a minority compared to men, so we are actively working to change and balance it. All female-identifying individuals enjoy a 20% discount on all commitment memberships.

No! We have members here who range from 4 years old to over 65+ ! We offer both adult and children’s classes. As a sport, jiu-jitsu should be and at Advantage Jiu-Jitsu is, truly for everyone.
